World Literacy Summit!

Blog > Focus Area: Literacy, General News

We are so proud of Esther Muinde and Sharon Runge who presented our work on engaging parents at the World Literacy Summit in Oxford, England. Esther shared the importance of engaging with parents of why their children should be reading. The challenge is that Kenya does not have a culture of reading and many parents and teachers never had access to books. Through passionate read aloud stories, a well-developed program that includes students, teachers and parents, we are becoming a community of readers. Their presentation was 1 of 100 selected to present from 500 applications.

While at the Summit, they learned from other passionate educators, researchers, and reading advocates. We are looking forward to incorporating some of the new learnings in our quest to be the “Village That Reads!”
