Imagine stepping onto a university campus for the first time, looking up at the high buildings, and realizing that your entire future is wide open. On May 22, eighty-five bright students from the Lower Yatta Girls’ and Kyaithani Expanding Horizons clubs got to experience exactly that. Accompanied by their dedicated teachers and KC staff members, these students spent an unforgettable day at the university for a mentorship forum designed to inspire the next generation of leaders. The students were excited from the very start, especially when the Dean of Students opened the event with a warm welcome that made everyone feel right at home.
The morning kicked off with some incredible advice on how to conquer schoolwork. Professor Geofrey Wango, a senior professor at the university, took the stage to share ten tried-and-true study strategies. Instead of just telling students to “study harder,” he broke it down into practical steps: get organized, build a routine, practice active recall, and use spaced repetition. He also reminded them to stay focused in class, avoid distractions, take good notes, cover all subjects, join study groups, and always ask questions. His biggest takeaway? Success doesn’t happen overnight, it comes from being consistent and staying active in your own learning journey.
Next up was Naomi Nyaboga from the Office of Career Services, who gave the students a glimpse into life after high school. She explained that her office was set up back in 2018 to help students develop modern, real-world skills alongside their degrees so they are completely ready for the job market. They even help with internship and job placements! Naomi gave the students a brilliant piece of advice: use the downtime right after high school graduation to take short courses. She pointed out that the job market is changing fast, and keeping your skills fresh is the best way to stay ahead. To wrap up, she walked them through the university’s ten departments and explained exactly what grades they would need to get in.
The excitement kept building when guest speaker Joseph Muraya from Central Careers took the microphone. He took everyone on a whirlwind tour of different career paths, from medicine and law to engineering, education, agriculture, and IT. You could see the sparks flying in the room as students realized just how many options are out there. Many of them later mentioned that the talk was a massive eye-opener that left them feeling incredibly motivated to go back home, hit the books, and chase their dreams.
Of course, no university visit is complete without a look around. The students got to go on a fun campus tour, which turned out to be full of exciting firsts. For many of them, just riding the elevators from floor to floor was a fascinating adventure. They also loved visiting the famous “Fountain of Knowledge” statue right in the center of campus and had a blast hanging out and making new friends with students from other schools.
By the time the buses loaded up to head home, the students were buzzing with inspiration. Cynthia Mutheu from Lower Yatta Girls’ shared that the day taught her how to look inward to find her path, noting that understanding her own personality, interests, and learning style will help her choose the perfect career. Joseph Musyoki from Kyaithani Secondary School felt the exact same way, calling the trip an eye-opening experience that gave him the focus he needs as he prepares to finish high school. It was more than just a day trip, it was the spark that might just change the course of these students’ futures.
