Teacher Joan is in charge of Grade 3 at Kaliambeu Comprehensive School. In June, she attended a Foundational literacy teacher training workshop where she learned the Shared Reading Circles Strategy to nurture and create the love for reading. As a result, she has set aside a reading time for her class. Not only does she help her learners select age appropriate books during library days, she also checks out books to read alongside her learners. Teacher Joan is a facilitator and a role model. She is not just teaching learners how to read, but also inspiring a lifelong habit of reading by making it meaningful, enjoyable and connected to everyday life.

Teacher Joan shared, “My learners have really embraced shared Reading Circles and they are enjoying reading together. After checking out Library books, I organize them in groups and they read and read. Sometimes they even read three titles in a session. I remember one time a circle was reading a Kiswahili title and I could hear them pronounce and articulate the words clearly. My learners are improving in reading. The practice has created the love for reading amongst my learners even early in the morning during Mathematics lessons, I often find them in circles reading.”
