Expanding Horizons Club students are on a Kindness Mission. After talking about kindness throughout the term, students carried out a community service activity to demonstrate and understand its importance and impact.
The Club Members from Lower Yatta Girl’s Secondary School, organized a community service visit to support a sick grandmother in their community. Fifty-six girls each contributed 20 shillings, which they used to purchase some items that the grandmother needed. Accompanied by their teacher and club mentor, Mr. Geoffrey Kioko, they walked together to the grandmother’s home.
When they visited the woman’s compound, students organized themselves into small groups and carried out tasks including sweeping, weeding the farm, preparing supper, and washing clothes.
“The girls truly impressed me with their teamwork and organization skills. This program has had a significant impact on them compared to the other students in the school. They are now showing empathy, collaboration, courage, and confidence that were not as visible before,” noted Mentor Kioko.
After completing the tasks, the students presented the items they had purchased. The grandmother was deeply moved by their kindness, offering them words of advice and blessings. Mutheu reflected, “I have learnt that kindness can be performed anywhere and to anyone, and this makes the world a better place”.
Mr. Kioko added, “Kindness costs nothing but means everything. These girls have learned an important value, as the world needs more kind people.”
