Compost Toilets

About this program

We’re keeping “Poop-in-the-Loop” with composting toilets installed at partner schools. Students and teachers have been delighted to use these toilets that do not smell or have flies. Easily managed using sawdust as the organic material to aid in the break down of waste, students and teachers are learning about the composting process through training by our compost managers. The waste is removed and added to a digester with food waste, corn husks, and grey water. The waste turns into rich compost in roughly 9 to 12 months. This nutrient filled compost can be used on school gardens or homestead farms.

“The compost toilets have been a game changer for our school, especially after the pit latrines collapsed from heavy rainfall. Since then, both students and teachers have fully embraced the usage of compost toilets, easing the issues caused by sinking latrines. Additionally, we’ve grown moringa and vegetables using humanure from the compost toilets, which are now a valuable source of food and a learning resource for our school community.”
