About this program
Parents and caregivers are essential to a child’s life. As we conducted interviews about teen pregnancy, we learned that parents were uncomfortable talking about sex and gender-based violence. As a result, we created a four session Girl/Boy Empowerment Parent component. At the heart of these workshops is the importance of parent/child communication. Building healthy relationships with children makes it easier to talk about sexual reproduction and builds pathways for children to be comfortable approaching parents with difficult quesitons. Along with the parent sessions, we have held one day programs to mobilize parents to discuss a variety of topics including communicaiton, early learning, literacy, and gender-based violence.

“These parent sessions have opened my eyes to the significance of listening to my children and being available to them. I realize there is more to parenting than telling children what to do. I grew up in a home where we never had conversations with our parents. I will ensure my children can talk to me.”
