The Pre-Primary ECDE Teacher Training Workshop, hosted through blended learning by the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning , provided an inspiring and impactful learning experience for 67 pre-primary teachers. Centered on the theme “Nurturing Creativity in the Classroom through Call and Response,” the workshop introduced educators to innovative ways of integrating music and drama into mathematics and literacy instruction. By leveraging the power of arts integration, teachers gained practical strategies to foster creativity, engagement, and deeper learning among young learners. As Plato once said, “I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” This philosophy was at the heart of the workshop, emphasizing the critical role of the arts in early childhood education.
The impact of the training was evident in the enthusiastic feedback from participants. Teacher Eunice shared, “I’m happy that I can now integrate music and drama into my teaching, making my lessons more engaging and fun for my learners.” Teacher Betty added, “The knowledge I’ve gained will help me effectively use shakers, a story box, and nurture creativity in my classroom through call and response. It was an eye-opening experience.” Their reflections highlight the transformative power of arts in education and the need for more creative teaching approaches.
Beyond skill-building, the workshop reinforced the importance of continuous professional development for educators. The enthusiasm and engagement displayed by the teachers underscored the growing need for capacity-building initiatives that equip educators with learner-centered, creative teaching techniques. As an educator, I firmly believe that integrating the arts into teaching is not just an enhancement but an essential component of effective learning. This workshop’s success reaffirms the invaluable role of the arts in education and the ongoing need to support teachers in their professional growth.
