Three cohorts of the Expanding Horizons Club recently graduated at Nyaani Secondary School, Kyaithani Secondary School, and Lower Yatta Girls Secondary School. The clubs began in 2024 when the students were in Form 2, and a total of 152 students graduated across the three schools. The graduation events were vibrant and filled with smiles, confidence, and powerful testimonies of growth.

Throughout the program, students developed strengths such as belonging, leadership, kindness, courage, confidence, and hope. They also gained life skills, career guidance, and opportunities to discover their talents and interests.

These three cohorts were particularly special because of the way the program was designed and delivered. Selected teachers from each school served as mentors, with the Kenya Connect team providing support.

The mentors were trained in the curriculum, the objectives of the club, and how to facilitate a typical Expanding Horizons session. Kenya Connect staff initially modelled and co-facilitated sessions, and over time, the patrons grew confident enough to lead the clubs on their own.

It has been deeply rewarding to watch the patrons gain confidence and to witness their growth as they pour into their learners. We also held termly refresher trainings where mentors could share stories, discuss challenges, and offer recommendations for improving the program.

Read-alouds were an important part of both the mentor trainings and the club sessions.

“I no longer conduct the read-alouds; it is the students who do,” shared Teacher Kimei from Kyaithani Secondary School. “Before club sessions, students rush to my office to pick the read-aloud book in advance, eager to read the story and later share it with the rest of the students. Through the read-alouds, they are gaining confidence day by day and are starting to open up.”

When we started the clubs, many of the students were shy and timid, reluctant to speak in front of their peers. By graduation day, those same students were boldly delivering spoken word performances, reciting poems, dancing, and performing skits. Their colourful and entertaining presentations were a true testament to how far they had come, and I was genuinely blown away by their confidence.

All three graduation ceremonies were student-led. Expanding Horizons students served as masters of ceremony and demonstrated their leadership and public speaking skills.

Fridah from Kyaithani Secondary School delivered a vote of thanks that left the audience clapping and ululating.

“Our sincere appreciation goes to Kenya Connect and the donors for believing in us and investing in our education, talents, leadership, and personal development,” she said. “Through your mentorship, you have inspired us to dream bigger and become responsible citizens.”

Esther Mbula, an Expanding Horizons graduate from Nyaani Secondary School, also reflected on her experience: “Being part of this club has been a great experience. We have learned so many things that have been beneficial to us so far and will continue to benefit us in the future. We now know that there is no limit to what we can achieve.”

Following the presentation of certificates, club patron Mr. Nyang’au recalled how the current student president was once too shy to speak in front of a crowd when he was in Form 2. Through the Expanding Horizons Club, he gained the confidence he needed to step forward and become a school leader.

The Expanding Horizons Club has proven once again that when young people are given the right environment, mentorship, and encouragement, they rise high. These 152 graduates leave with more than certificates. They leave with courage, confidence, and the belief that there is no limit to what they can achieve.
