As the Director of Education and IT at Kenya Connect, I find immense joy in witnessing students harness technology to solve real-world problems. One such student, Ian, has been a source of inspiration and pride for me since he was in the fourth grade. His passion for technology was evident from the start, and it has only grown over the years.
In 2022, we launched our EdTech hub, a space dedicated to nurturing young minds like Ian’s. Since its inception, Ian has been a regular visitor, dedicating his school holidays to expanding his knowledge. After mastering the basics of coding with Scratch, Ian expressed a keen interest in robotics. Initially, I was uncertain about how to guide him further. However, my visit to the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) in Nairobi last year sparked new ideas on how to engage Ian and others in such competitions.
Together, we embarked on a journey of building and programming robots. This year, Ian, along with his teammates Nelius and Mary, participated in their first WRO competition in the junior category. Competing against 22 teams from well-established schools, they secured an impressive 4th place.
While Ian had hoped for a win, his determination has only grown stronger. He has now advanced his programming skills, transitioning to Python for robot programming. Not only is he mastering this new language, but he is also mentoring Nelius and Mary in Python, embodying the spirit of collaborative learning.

Ian’s achievements underscore the critical role that Kenya Connect plays in providing students from under-resourced schools with opportunities they might not otherwise have. I firmly believe that with access to the right resources, every student has the potential to achieve greatness. Ian’s team’s performance at the WRO is a testament to this belief.
Witnessing the growth and development of students like Ian fills my heart with pride and reinforces my commitment to our mission. It is stories like his that motivate me to rise each morning, eager to work with our children and contribute to lasting change. I am hopeful that many more students will continue to benefit from Kenya Connect’s programs, paving the way for diverse and fulfilling career paths.
