KC5K Running to Read 2023!

The 2023 Running to Read 5K race was held in Wamunyu on October 7 with 30 teams from partner schools competing to be the fastest team. A total of 180 students, 6 participants from each school, competed to win the trophy. We are thrilled to announce that the top school was Kaitha Primary School, the top girl runner was Faith Mwikali, Mbaikini PS and the top boy was Michael Mary, Kithiiani PS. The event began with a lively parade through town which was followed by a run by the team at the Wamunyu Special School. The students and visitors then were flagged to head on the course through the hills of Wamunyu. We were thrilled to have a team of visitors from the U.S. and Canada participate as runners, walkers, and volunteers!

Following the celebration for the race participants, we crowned the 2023 READING CHALLENGE QUEEN AND KING! These students have been reading books since the challenge was launched in June and recording them in colorful guides created by students at the Garrison Forest School. We are proud to announce that The King reader was Israel from Kambiti Primary School reading 87 books and the Queen reader was Evelyn from Mbaikini PS who read 95 books. They shared words of wisdom about reading with the students and teachers and helped cut the fabulous “Reading” cake made by Wandy Baker.
