Kenya Connect is ecstatic to be the recipient of two grants supporting our work to become #TheVillageThatReads. The Gupta Family Foundation awarded a 2019 $15,000 grant to be used for a 2nd vehicle so we can expand our library reach to distant schools ($10,000) and for operational support ($5,000). The $10k by the Gupta Family Foundation is added to our “Mobile Library #2” fund of $18,000 (thanks to gifts from our school partners and a very generous donor). We are NOW seeking an additional $7,000 so we can purchase the vehicle by June. Donations can be made on PayPal or GlobalGiving. The Gupta Family Foundation is an amazing partner who has provided us with generous support, cutting-edge ideas, and NGO connections.
We are also thrilled to announce that St. Margaret’s Church Foundation(Annapolis) awarded Kenya Connect with a $9700 grant for our Literacy Program. This grant will help us expand our library by purchasing books in Kenya and the U.S. Currently we have 7,000 books for 17,000 students in the community. This grant will help us purchase high quality books to add to our collection. The grant also provides resources for the “I Love Reading” lanyards and library card materials including extra scanners for our library team. Currently 2,250 students have library cards and our goal is to increase the number to 4,000 by the end of the year. This is our second grant award from St. Margaret’s. Previously they had provided funds for the popular BRCK Kio Kit which includes tablets that we have used as e-readers.
Meanwhile during the April school break, Kenya Connect has hosted Fun Book Enrichment Days at partner schools. These Book Days are designed with interactive literacy games and activities to nurture a comfort and love of reading.
We are deeply grateful to the Gupta Family Foundation and St. Margaret’s Church Foundation for these generous gifts. We are also thankful for the hundreds of friends who have donated books, supported the Walk for Wamunyu and financially donated to our reading program.
