Laura Carter began her association with Kenya Connect in 2008, when her 6th grade students became pen pal partners with children at Kyamatula Primary School. Two years later she traveled to Kenya with the co-founder of the organization, Tim Gregory, to meet and work with the teachers and students whose correspondence had such profound impact on her classroom. As a direct result of data gathered on this trip, Ms. Carter initiated a teacher training program, Kenya Connect Teachers, to bring 21st century teaching and learning skills to our Kenyan partner teachers. Ms. Carter was the 2011 Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year and one of seven finalists for the Maryland State Teacher of the Year. Her expertise in teaching literacy through Arts Integration, developing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) projects, and delivering leading edge teacher training workshops uniquely qualify Ms. Carter to lead the effort to bring exceptional professional development opportunities to our partner teachers in Kenya. Her fond hope is that one day, we will have true teacher exchanges between the U.S. and Kenya collaborating across culture and around the globe.
